ExplorerPatcher Download and Installation Checklist for Windows

Check architecture, publisher, file integrity, and recovery options before installing ExplorerPatcher on Windows.

Choose the correct architecture

Determine whether the device uses an x64 or ARM64 processor in Windows Settings under System and About. A file designed for one architecture may not work on the other. Check the current release documentation before choosing a package.

Verify the source

Prefer the project’s authentic release notes and a trusted distribution source. Check the exact filename, version, publishing identity, and any published checksums or digital signatures where available. A download button alone does not prove authenticity.

Before running an installer

Save documents, close sensitive workflows, create a recovery point, and make sure you have a way to restore the desktop if a shell extension fails. Managed work devices may require administrator approval.

Install cautiously

Follow the instructions that apply to your particular release rather than an older video. Read any warning screens, avoid bundles, and do not disable security software solely to complete setup.

After installation

Test Start, the taskbar, File Explorer, search, and multiple monitors. Record which options were changed. If Windows updates later alter behavior, check updated compatibility notes before reinstalling.

Practical checklist

Review the Windows 11 build, processor architecture, current release notes, and the specific option you want to change. Save your current settings before you begin. Test one change at a time, including startup, sign-in, taskbar, Start, and File Explorer behavior. Keep a documented rollback method ready.

For Windows users in the United States and Canada

The available ExplorerPatcher configuration does not depend on whether your Windows PC is used in the US or Canada. However, regional settings, keyboard layout, Microsoft account policies, work-device management, and Windows update deployment schedules can change the experience. Use your system’s current language and regional settings when following on-screen instructions.

Where to verify changes

For current releases, support status, code, and issue discussions, consult the ExplorerPatcher project repository. Do not confuse a third-party guide with the source of authoritative installers. Use our main ExplorerPatcher overview to compare features and common usage scenarios.

In-depth ExplorerPatcher guidance

ExplorerPatcher download: the trusted source

The ExplorerPatcher developer identifies the valinet/ExplorerPatcher GitHub Releases page as the only official distribution channel for installers. Before downloading, navigate directly to https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher/releases and review the release notes. A file or download button on a third-party information site should not be mistaken for an official installer or independently verified binary.

Choose between ep_setup.exe and ep_setup_arm64.exe

For an Intel or AMD Windows device, the project identifies ep_setup.exe. For a Windows-on-ARM device, such as one using a Snapdragon processor, the project identifies ep_setup_arm64.exe. Confirm the device architecture under Windows Settings > System > About. A mismatched installer may fail or behave unexpectedly.

Document a recovery route before setup

Record the exact Windows edition and OS build, back up work, and know how to open Windows recovery options. ExplorerPatcher modifies the desktop shell, so a cumulative update can alter its behavior. Avoid deploying shell changes to important workstations without testing.

What happens during installation?

The upstream instructions say the installer requests elevation, temporarily closes explorer.exe and returns to the desktop after configuration. After it starts, right-click the taskbar and open Properties to review taskbar and Start menu options. Do not assume all features are available on every Windows version.
